Code of Conduct
This code of conduct is based on the JSConf™ Code of Conduct, Citizen Code of Conduct, NodeConf Photography Policy, and Open Source Bridge Recording Policy.
By attending any OpenVis Conf event in any capacity, including as a delegate, speaker, sponsor, volunteer, or guest, you agree to abide by this code of conduct, and cooperate with the event organizers who enforce it.
The Quick Version
OpenVisConf is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate in a professional environment. We do not tolerate harassment in any form and we are committed to partnering with you to foster a healthy work environment.
The Less Quick Version
This document exists to empower individuals working at or with OpenVisConf to create an atmosphere that is professional, empathetic, and conducive to learning.
Individuals are expected to behave appropriately and professionally during their participation in all projects, collaborations or events. In particular, all individuals should actively avoid intentionally or unintentionally participating in the harassment of individuals. Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption in meetings, lectures or other spaces, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
OpenVisConf employees, customers, partners, event sponsors, and community members are all subject to the same expectations.
Consequences of Unacceptable Behavior
OpenVisConf in the course of enforcing this document may, at their discretion, ask an individual to stop some behavior, warn the individual of their violation, or further sanction the individual. If the offensive behavior is displayed by a customer of OpenVisConf, consequences may include escalating to customer leadership. If the offensive behavior is displayed during participation in an event hosted by OpenVisConf, consequences may include expulsion from the event with no refund (including no return of sponsorship contributions). Individuals are expected to comply immediately with such requests from OpenVisConf.
Reporting Unacceptable Behavior
If another individual asks you to stop engaging in some behavior in the course of your work with OpenVisConf, you should comply immediately, and are encouraged to contact a member of the OpenVisConf leadership team further guidance, If you observe any behavior that violates these expectations please contact a member of the OpenVisConf leadership team. A supplemental goal of this Code of Conduct is to increase open source citizenship by encouraging individuals to recognize and strengthen the relationships between our actions and their effects on our community. Communities mirror the societies in which they exist and positive action is essential to counteract the many forms of inequality and abuses of power that exist in society. If you see someone who is making an extra effort to ensure our community is welcoming, friendly, and encourages all individuals to contribute to the fullest extent, we want to know.
Event Photography Policy
At our events and conferences, we encourage attendees to take and share their own photographs. We also engage photographers as staff members to document our events in an official capacity. Anyone taking photos is expected to follow the general Code of Conduct, as well as abide by the guidelines in this policy.
Photography should be treated like other potentially harassing interpersonal interaction. That is, when one person in the interaction says “stop” or “leave me alone” (etc), the interaction must end. In this case, attendees should not attempt to photograph that individual again. Photographers should use judgment and be considerate of the people in their photographs, especially if photographing individuals with whom they are not personally acquainted.
Because it can be difficult for photographers to know everything they’ve captured in a given shot until after the photo is taken, the rest of this policy pertains exclusively to the publication of photography and not the capture of it. Publication includes both marketing media like websites and print collateral, as well posting to social media like Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, or Facebook.
The Main Rule
Anyone can ask that a photo of themselves be unpublished or that they be removed from the photo at any time for any reason. Refusing to do so is a breach of the Code of Conduct and will result in you being expelled from the c onference and banned from future events.
“NO PHOTO” Lanyards
At registration, distinct lanyards are available for people who wish to opt out of having photos published of them. The lanyards will be clearly identified as “NO PHOTO” lanyards to all participants.
The conference prohibits photos being published at any time where the subject of the photo is wearing this lanyard. If an attendee chooses to be photographed, they should remove their lanyard prior to being photographed. Community members who notice photos published which violate this rule should notify the original publisher. If they refuse to remove the photos, please inform the conference staff.
NO PHOTO lanyards are a signal to those publishing and potentially viewing photos to help communicate and regulate their preference, but choosing not to wear this lanyard does not preclude someone from being able to exercise the Main Rule. Regardless of what lanyard someone wears they can still ask that a photo of them be unpublished.
We expect individuals to follow these rules at all times while working at or with OpenVisConf, while contributing to an OpenVisConf project, and while attending an OpenVisConf event.
